Can you give them a lift? Generally speaking, turtle populations are declining because of road kill, habitat destruction, pollution, and pet and food trade. Thousands of female turtles are killed every year crossing roads. The survival of turtle populations depends on the historically low mortality rate of adult turtles. However, turtles have not adapted to the loss of adult females through road kills, so this has a strong effect on turtle populations. A quick act of kindness can mean the turtle you see lives to lay eggs another year.
Our own Dr. Jenkins is a USDA-certified wildlife rehabilitator with a strong interest in turtles. We do all our wildlife rehabilitation work on a volunteer basis. If you find an injured turtle, call us to see if we have a habitat open. If so, we can rehabilitate that turtle and return it to the wild.
