Heat Exhaustion Top BreedsThe summer is heating up and Dr. Louise Murray, vice president of the ASPCA Animal Hospital, recently named these eight breeds as the most at risk for overheating in warm weather. Most of these breeds are brachycephalic, or dogs that have short noses, compact skulls and compressed upper respiratory systems. Consequently, these breeds prove less efficient at panting and can’t cool themselves as effectively as other breeds.

  1. Pug
  2. Pekinese
  3. Bulldog
  4. Shih Tzu
  5. Boston Terrier
  6. French Bulldog
  7. Boxer
  8. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

We can’t stress enough the importance of taking proper precautions to keep your pup cool, no matter the breed. For example, never (ever!) leave your pet in a hot car for any period of time, give your dog plenty of water and access to a shaded area, and consider keeping them inside on very hot days.
