Ear mites are a highly contagious and bothersome pest to pets. They inhabit the inner and external ear canal and can lead to serious skin and ear infections. The trademark excessive scratching and head shaking can also cause blood vessels in the ears to rupture. Because of this, it’s important to be able to recognize the signs of ear mites and to see a veterinarian promptly.

Symptoms of ear mites include:

• Excessively scratching the ears
• Head shaking
• Inflammation
• Strong odor
• Black/brown waxy secretion
• Discharge that looks like coffee grounds

Ear mites are highly contagious. If you suspect one pet of having them, keep him or her away from any others to prevent spreading the mites. Also, bring the pet to us for an examination.
