Whether your pet is young, old, or in between, sometimes accidents happen. When they do, they can leave an unpleasant odor. Besides that, urine odor trapped in carpets can lead to dogs using that spot in the future. Below are some tips for getting rid of dog urine smells.

One of the best things for getting rid of urine odors is enzyme-based cleaners. There are specific cleaners out there designed for dog urine. If you don’t have a bottle on hand, there are some homebased remedies, too.

The first thing to do with urine on carpet is to place towels on the spot. You can stand on the towels to speed the absorption. You want to get as much of the urine out as quickly as possible. Afterwards, put baking soda over the spot. About a ¼ cup or less is usually enough. Spread it evenly and thinly over the damp area. Let it sit overnight and vacuum thoroughly.

For a quicker clean, try making a solution of vinegar, baking soda, and water. Just put 2 teaspoons of baking soda into a solution that is one cup white vinegar and one cup water. Put it in a spray bottle and spray the stain. Let it sit for a view minutes and blot with towels until clean.

Do not use ammonia or bleach to clean a urine stain. It does not get rid of the smell. Also, do not use a steam cleaner as it will only set the stain.
