Pets are wonderful, but they can bring their own challenges such as pests. Our pets may bring in fleas and cause a potential infestation in our homes. When fleas turn up, how do we get rid of them. We will discuss some home remedies below.

Your vacuum cleaner should be your best friend in this situation. Vacuum cleaners are great for reducing the number of fleas and eggs caught in carpeting, floor cracks, curtains, and upholstered furniture. Regular vacuuming can cut down on the risk of flea infestations. Besides vacuuming, there are some ways to treat carpet to make vacuuming more effective. These include brushing baking soda or sprinkling salt onto the carpet and vacuuming it up. With baking soda, brush it into the carpet and vacuum it up soon after. With salt, sprinkle it in the carpeting and leave it sitting for two days. Afterward, vacuum it up. When you’ve finished vacuuming, empty the vacuum and place the contents in a trash can outside. This prevents fleas from getting back out into your house.

With infected bedding, pillows, etc., it’s important to wash them in hot, soapy water. Dry off the bedding on high heat for 40 minutes. These two steps help destroy flea eggs and larvae.

Also, be sure to get your pet checked at the vet after a flea outbreak. If he or she is not on flea medication, talk to your vet about options. Prevention is the best way to prevent flea outbreaks.
