With kitten season arriving there is no better time to educate ourselves about fading kitten syndrome. Fading kitten syndrome is a set of symptoms that are associated with a failure to thrive in neonatal kittens. It can have many underlying causes, which can lead to declining health and even death.

The causes of fading kitten syndrome can range from environmental issues, parasites, congenital defects, and viral infections. Fading kittens often have dehydration or hypoglycemia that must be addressed through supportive, medical care.

Know the signs:
• Lethargy
• Lack of interest in nursing
• Dehydration
• Pale gums
• Sleeping separate from the rest of the litter
• Crying out as if in pain or struggling

The most important thing for kitten caregivers to know is that fading kitten syndrome does not have to be a death sentence. By acting quickly, knowing the symptoms, and working with a veterinarian, the chance of survival goes up.
