Fear Free Pet Visit

Does your dog or cat become anxious at the idea of going to the vet? While some dogs and cats enjoy going on an adventure, others are fearful and anxious at the prospect. Annual wellness checks are an essential part of keeping pets healthy. With a positive attitude and a little training, it can be a better experience for everyone, including your furry friend. Here are a few tips to help make vet visits go a lot smoother for both owners and their pets.

Socialize: Start training at an early age by bringing the puppy or kitten for a “happy visit”, greet the staff, get loves, pets, and even treats. Ask the office staff what the least busy times in the office may be. Take the dog for a visit and spend some time in the lobby and provide treats.

Desensitize: The Animal Behavior College recommends spending time handling the dog and getting him or her used to being touched all over. Once the animal is relaxed, begin by gently handling the ears, paws, lips, and mouth. Reward with plenty of positive praise!

Car rides: For many dogs, a stressful vet visit begins with the car. Mostly the stress is because the only car ride always ends up at the vet’s office. Start taking Rover on short rides around the block, go to the pet store, or other fun places. And again, positive praise!

Make the VET fun! Take the dog to visit the vet for a meet and greet of the staff. They can shower him or her with hugs and treats. The American Kennel Club suggests that it’s a good idea to spend a few minutes just hanging out in the waiting room.

In reality, there are some aspects of going to the vet that will never be fun for a dog, but if you are willing to go the extra mile, your dog will overcome a fear of visiting a vet.
