Puppy and Kitten Vaccinations

There are certain core vaccinations that are necessary to help keep your new kitten or puppy protected from contagious diseases. And it is important to keep in mind that it takes a few days to a few weeks for vaccinations to become effective. Your veterinarian may also recommend other vaccinations for your pet depending on location and the animal’s lifestyle. For example, it might be recommended that certain non-core vaccinations be given if the cat or dog is outdoors only or boarded often.

The core vaccinations for a new dog are the DHPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza, and Parvovirus) and the rabies vaccination. The core vaccinations for a new cat are the Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia (FVRCP), and the rabies vaccination. The rabies vaccination is required by law in most states.

Pet vaccinations, like those for humans, may require a booster to keep them effective. The best way to keep vaccinations on schedule is to follow the recommendations of a local veterinarian.
